Camping
A common, though often looked-down-upon tactic in multiplayer modes of shooters
where a player remains in the same position for long periods of time to attempt to ambush enemy players.
CTF – Capture The Flag
A multiplayer game mode in which the players are split into teams. The objective
of the game is to use teamwork to steal the other team's flag and bring it back to the player's home base. The flag
carrier is often made slower, unable to use (powerful) weapons and/or use vehicles.
Deathmatch
Every-man-for-himself multiplayer game mode, commonly found in shooters, where
the last man standing wins.
DLC – Downloadable Content
Any type of content that adds to an existing game, generally adding new weapons,
characters, vehicles or levels to the game.
FPS – First Person Shooter
A game genre in which the player's view is as if he is looking through the eyes
of the character he is playing as. The player generally does not see the character's body but only the hands and weapons.
Frag
The common term for fragmentation grenade (exploding grenades) in shooters.
Also used to count the number of kills a player has made, minus the number of suicides.
Friendly fire
Commonly found in shooters, this game setting, which can not always be turned on
or off, either enables or disables players on the same team to hurt eachother with their weapons (gunfire, use of
explosives, etc).
HUD – Heads Up Display
The information displayed on screen while playing. Often the HUD shows the character's
health, currently selected weapon, ammunition counter, cross hairs, a map or radar and/or other information.
Kill streak
A term commonly used in multiplayer games for aquiring multiple kills in a row on
a single life.
King of the Hill
A multiplayer game mode where the objective is for players (in teams) to
capture and maintain control of certain areas of the map to gain points.
Melee
Hand-to-hand combat (possibly using hand-held weapons) between the player's character
and an NPC or another player's character. Melee attacks in shooters are generally used as last resort defenses or
"surprise kills" by sneaking up behind another player's character.
Nade
Short for grenade. Commonly referring to fragmentation grenades (frags).
Nade spamming
The act of throwing a large amount of grenades in a row. Commonly seen in multiplayer
modes of shooters, especially if the game gives players an unlimited or quickly regenerating amount of grenades, though also
possible by having multiple people throwing grenades in the same location at once or in a row.
Noob
Insult for someone new to or not very good at a game.
Noob tube
A weapon, generally a rocket launcher of some sort, which makes it easier for (new)
players to kill other players' characters.
NPC – Non-Playable Chacter
A computer-controlled character in a game. NPCs can be opponents, allies or neither
and can be interactive but don't have to be.
Respawn
Re-entering a game after having been killed (either by another player, an NPC or by
act of suicide)
RPG – Rocket Propelled Grenade
A hand-held anti-armour/anti-vehicle weapon, shot from the shoulder.
RPG – Role Playing Game
A game genre in which the player selects his own character (looks, type and attributes),
which can be levelled up (made stronger) by completing quests in the game.
RTS – Real-Time Strategy
A war-type game genre in which the player generally has to build and defend bases from
which he can create new troups and vehicles to combat the opponents (computer controlled or human).
As the name implies, this game genre is heavy on strategy.
Sandbox
A game genre in which the player has access to a large area (such as an entire city or
island) in which he is free to roam and further the game's story – generally by accepting missions – at will.
Shooter
A game genre in which the player's main weapons are firearms (handguns, rifles, shotguns, etc.)
Spawn
Entering a multiplayer game. Also see Spawn Point.
Spawn camping
A common, though often looked-down-upon tactic in multiplayer modes of shooters where
a player is in a position where (s)he can see players spawn or respawn and attempts to get instant kills.
Spawn point
The location at which a player spawns. To try and prevent spawn camping many games
contain multiple spawn points from which the player can often choose. The spawn point can also be the home base
of a team which can, but doesn't have to be, inaccessable to the other team.
Squad
A group of players, generally up to four people, working as a team.
Suicide
The act of (accidentally) killing the one's own character. This can in many games
occur when falling from large heights or when a player gets caught by the blast of his own explosives. Some games allow
a player to suicide his character to get out of impossible situations or to be able to re-spawn.
Tea-bagging
After scoring a kill in a multiplayer game of a first or third person shooter, the
killer positions his character over the head of the dead character, repeatedly crouching and standing up to humiliate
the killed player.
Team deathmatch
A multiplayer game mode, commonly found in shooters, where players are split up in two
or more teams fighting until only one team (member) survives.
TPS – Third Person Shooter
A game genre in which the player's view is as if he is looking over the shoulder
(sometimes slightly off to the side) of the character he is playing as. The player generally sees most of (or all of)
the character's body from the back while playing.
